A question about the Pope....?
Ok, I respect the Pope as being a very holy man. I heard his (and previous popes') talks, and I believe that he is well suited for the position, as were the popes I have seen before him.
There is just ONE tradition about the papcy that I have a problem with. The Pope is supposed to be Jesus' representative and head of the Church, as Jesus himself stated when He gave the power to Peter. However, I am a bit turned off by the elegance the Pope commands. He wears gold-woven robes, wears extremely expensive shoes, and is surrounded by very, very nice things.
Is this the impression we should be giving outsiders to the faith? Jesus was a very simple man, so I think His representative should be, too. Do you agree? Does anyone else believe that the papacy has gotten too materialistic?
Or does anyone have a reason for this? The best I have gotten so far is "it's a tradition" from my mother-in-law, and I am not entirely satisfied with that.

As some have said, the Pope doesn't actually own many of these things, they're passed down through the ages which increases their value and give people a way of saying "that costs $4,000 and it's just a hat?!" when that hat probably originally cost maybe $50.
But, more importantly, if you notice, the Pope only wears those elaborate robes and such when he is doing something directly related to glorifying God. The rest of the time he wears a simple white robe. Generally the only time he wears something costly is during the Celebration of Mass.
I believe the shoes were a gift from someone, though I can't remember.
